How to Disable Facebook Notifications on Android

Facebook

If you read my previous post on

how to sync game progress on Android

, you’d know that I now own not one but two of these devices. One annoying problem I suffered from maintaining multiple devices is multiple notifications. Each time I got a

new notification

, friend request or a message on Facebook, both my devices notified me simultaneously. Gets irritating after a while.

Gmail, Google+ and Facebook were the three most annoying apps when talking about multiple notifications and uninstalling the apps in one of these devices was not the solution I would settle for. So to make a start, today I will try to disable notifications from Facebook for Android.

Even if you don’t have multiple Android devices there’s no need to pull away. In this post we will not only show you how you can mute all the notifications, but also talk about disabling message alerts from individual friends you wish to ignore.

So let’s begin…

Mute all the Notifications

The first thing we will see is muting all the notifications from Facebook on Android. If you are using Jelly Bean on your device, you can directly disable app drawer notification for Facebook app from Android settings. We have already seen how it is done in one of our previous articles.

If your device has not yet received the Jelly Bean upgrade then you will have to disable these notifications from the Facebook app settings.

Open Facebook for Android on your device, open the in-app menu and select Settings. Scroll down to find the Notification option in there. If you would like to disable all the notifications from the app (comments, wall posts, messages, etc.) simply uncheck that option.

However, if you want to turn off only specific ones like messages and wall posts, you will have to uncheck the respective options. You can also choose to keep all the notifications active but silence them or just keep them on vibration alert. When you are done, simply click on the back button to save the settings.

That was how one can disable all or some specific notification types. Let’s now have a look at how you can disable message notifications from certain friends.

Mute Notification from Specific Friends

Open the Facebook app and tap on the three lines button on the top left corner to open its navigation panel. Using this panel you can navigate from one section to another easily. Tap on the search box at the top and type in the name of the contact you would like to block. Tap on the friend’s name from the returned search results to open his wall.

Tap on the message button on his wall to open the Messaging page. If you have recently had some conversation with that friend, you can open the conversation window by using the message button in between notifications and new friend requests.

You must now tap the information button on the top-right corner. Here you could turn off notification from this conversation. You can either disable the notifications permanently or mute it for a specific period of time. If you go for a limited time, the notifications will get enabled automatically for that friend after the time runs out.

Conclusion

So that was how you can disable notifications from Facebook on Android and keep it limited to only one of your many Android devices (if you have more than one that is). Hope that comes in handy. I am sure the second part of the post about muting alerts from specific contacts would be useful to many. After all, we all have had such friends on Facebook, haven’t we?
